As proprietor at Matt's Music, I am frequently approached by parents to discontinue their child's weekly one-on-one lesson during the summer months. This means that some students will not have a session for as many as 12 weeks. 

Children between the ages of seven and sixteen are in growth periods that affect their bodies mentally, physically, and emotionally. No matter what instrument they are playing, be it strings, keyboards, percussion, brass, or woodwinds, their progress depends upon consistent, continuous reinforcement of all that it takes to adequately improve their skills on that instrument. We find that in many cases the child may lose interest, dexterity, and enthusiasm, resulting from long layoffs from their instrument. To that end we recommend a summer program of weekly or bi-weekly instruction during the time off from school. When the children return to school in September, generally those that have not disrupted the progress of learning and improving on their instrument are further along in their abilities to perform than those who have laid off for the summer.
